Minor Hotels has appointed Jason Marques as General Manager of Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, one of Lisbon’s most recognised luxury hotels and a landmark property in the Portuguese capital.

With more than 20 years of international hospitality experience, Marques brings a strong background in luxury hotels, resorts and hotel operations across Europe, Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Middle East. He takes on his new role after spending the past two years as General Manager of Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort.

At Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, Marques will focus on building on the hotel’s established reputation while protecting the heritage, character and sense of place that have made it an important part of Lisbon’s hospitality landscape.

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade has a special place in the history of Portuguese hospitality. Opened in 1933 as the first Tivoli hotel, the property is where the Tivoli brand began and has remained closely connected with Lisbon’s identity for more than nine decades.

Located on Avenida da Liberdade, the hotel is known for its historic character, refined interiors and high standards of service. Today, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is part of The Leading Hotels of the World, continuing a long tradition of luxury hospitality in Lisbon. Marques will work with the hotel team to further develop the guest experience while identifying opportunities for fresh ideas, business growth and continued evolution of the property.

Global Luxury Hospitality Experience

Marques began his hospitality career in 2003 at Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Resort in the Algarve, after completing a qualification in Sustainable Tourism at INUAF – Instituto Superior Dom Afonso III.

His career soon expanded beyond Portugal. In 2012, he joined Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Algeria as Front Office Manager at Le Méridien Oran Hotel & Convention Centre. He later progressed to Director of Rooms & Green Belt before becoming Director of Rooms at Sheraton Club des Pins Hotel & Resort.

In 2016, Marques moved to the Seychelles, where he took on the role of Executive Assistant General Manager at Le Méridien Fisherman’s Cove. His international experience continued in the Maldives when he joined Constance Halaveli Maldives as Resort Manager in 2018.

He returned to the Seychelles in 2020 to oversee the opening of a new Marriott International resort, taking on responsibilities as both General Manager and Owner’s Representative.

Marques then moved to Marriott International’s London headquarters, where he served as Senior Manager, Franchise Operations for Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The role saw him oversee the operational performance of 116 hotels across Southern Europe, adding significant experience in hotel management, operations and franchise performance to his career.

New leadership

In January 2024, Marques joined Minor Hotels as General Manager of Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort. His appointment at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade now marks the next chapter in a career that has taken him across some of the world’s leading luxury hotel destinations. His experience across resort operations, hotel openings, international markets and luxury hospitality will support Tivoli Avenida Liberdade as it continues to evolve while staying connected to its historic roots.

As General Manager, Marques will work closely with the hotel’s team to develop its services and guest offering, while maintaining the distinctive identity that has made Tivoli Avenida Liberdade a longstanding name in Lisbon luxury hotels.
