Running from Friday 22 May to Saturday 13 June, Vivid Sydney returns with a spectacular 23-day celebration that transforms Sydney into a vibrant hub of creativity, culture, and innovation. Spanning four dynamic pillars—Vivid Light, Vivid Music, Vivid Minds, and Vivid Food—the festival showcases the very best of the city’s artistic energy, making it one of the most anticipated winter events in Australia.

One of the biggest highlights is the iconic Vivid Light Walk, which remains completely free and continues to draw millions of visitors each year. Stretching an impressive 6.5 kilometres, this immersive trail features over 43 breathtaking light installations and projections created by renowned local and international artists. The walk winds through some of Sydney’s most famous waterfront precincts, including Circular Quay, The Rocks, Barangaroo, and Darling Harbour.

Beyond the light displays, Vivid Sydney extends across the CBD with a diverse lineup of events, talks, performances, and dining experiences. The festival also features exciting collaborations with leading cultural institutions such as Biennale of Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Australian National Maritime Museum, City Recital Hall, State Library of New South Wales, and the world-famous Sydney Opera House.

Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said Vivid Sydney will be bigger and better than ever before. “No other city in the world can host Vivid, because no other city in the world has what Sydney has to offer. Vivid Sydney 2026 will redefine how we experience our city, delivering a bigger and bolder event program that will come to life both day and night.”

“With more than 80 per cent of the program free to attend, Vivid Sydney is focused on making world-leading cultural experiences accessible to everyone. Whether it’s the entire 6.5km Vivid Light Walk, free live music at Tumbalong Nights or dynamic daytime programming, this year’s festival will bring colour and creativity to the city while delivering a significant boost to local businesses. The NSW Government has an ambitious target of growing the state’s visitor economy to $91 billion over the next decade, and major events such as Vivid Sydney play a key role in driving domestic and international visitation, supporting jobs and delivering real economic and social benefits across the state.”

Last year, Vivid Sydney partnered with more than 400 local businesses, enriching a global cultural celebration that draws millions of visitors to the city and strengthens NSW’s visitor and night‑time economies. Expressions of interest for the 2026 Vivid Sydney Local Business Program are now open and close on 3 April 2026.

Vivid Sydney 2026 marks Brett Sheehy AO’s first year as Festival Director; a creative homecoming after two decades leading major festivals and arts companies across Australia.

Vivid Sydney Festival Director Brett Sheehy AO said this year’s program represents a bold new horizon for the event.  “For 2026 we are expanding our program into new artforms including aerial performance, daytime public art, theatre and dance. These join our vast Vivid Minds, Light, Music and Food offerings to now make your Vivid Sydney one of the great comprehensive arts festivals of the world. ”

“This year we invite you to go beyond your previous expectations of Vivid Sydney into a bold new festival designed to surprise, delight, challenge, entertain, and fill you with joy. Whether you encounter Vivid Sydney as a happy observer, an eager participant, or someone keen to engage with one of our dozens of interactive opportunities, we can promise you a festival of a lifetime,” said Mr Sheehy.

Vivid Sydney returns with its most ambitious Vivid Light program yet, headlined by two spectacular centrepieces. Molecule of Light, a towering 23-metre installation, and Obstacle, a 45-metre LED experience, redefine the scale of light art in Sydney.

At Barangaroo Reserve, British artist Chris Levine presents Molecule of Light—a hypnotic fusion of laser beams, geometric patterns, and healing sound frequencies designed to create a deeply meditative atmosphere. Meanwhile, Melbourne collective Reelize transforms Wulugul Walk into a glowing corridor with Obstacle, a dynamic tunnel of colour and motion.

At the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Vaiola by Angela Tiatia explores themes of identity and healing through a powerful projection mapping inspired by water. Across the harbour, French artist Yann Nguema illuminates the sails of the Sydney Opera House with Opera Mundi, a stunning tribute to nature and architect Jørn Utzon.

Cockle Bay comes alive with Laser Lightfall, Australia’s most ambitious free laser show, alongside the return of the reimagined Star-Bound Drone Show, lighting up the sky with 22 performances across 11 nights.

Vivid Minds brings together global thinkers and creatives, including Oscar-winning filmmakers Sean Baker and Chloé Zhao, cultural voices like Zane Lowe, Jerry Saltz, and author Roxane Gay. Expect powerful discussions on creativity, storytelling, and cultural shifts shaping today’s world.

Highlights include Cristal Palace, a free outdoor circus-style spectacle at the Opera House Forecourt, and Wonderverse, an immersive light-and-sound experience designed for families. The Midweek Minds series features rapid-fire talks from global creatives like Dong-Ping Wong and Mindy Seu.

At the heart of the new Regional Dinner Series is A Shared Table with Yotam Ottolenghi, where the world‑renowned chef will bring together ingredients and flavours from across the state, placing regional identity and provenance at the heart of the menu. He says, “I have a very good reason to be happy! I’m coming back to Australia to be part of Vivid Sydney at such a dynamic moment in the city’s cultural calendar. “

“More than anything, it’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the outstanding produce and beverages of New South Wales and to share the kind of food that I love and that also tells the story of the region’s creativity and generosity.”

The Regional Dinner Series brings together top chefs for exclusive collaborations at venues like the Sydney Opera House. At Barangaroo Reserve, Vivid Fire Kitchen offers a free, open-air experience with live cooking, tastings, and appearances from leading chefs, including Luke Mangan and Mark Best.

Pop-up dining, curated menus, and immersive food events take over venues across the city, making it a must for food lovers.

Vivid Music delivers an electrifying lineup of international, special events, interactive experiences , and performances. Tumbalong Nights returns with 23 nights of free live music and DJs, including a special closing night performance from Matt Corby.

Venues across Sydney, including City Recital Hall and Oxford Art Factory, host intimate gigs and headline acts, while special events extend into the Biennale of Sydney program.

Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House will welcome more than 50 cutting-edge and legendary international and Australian artists in 2026, including awe-inspiring singer-songwriter Mitski (sold out), 30th anniversary performances from Scottish post-rock pioneers Mogwai and Detroit techno icon Jeff Mills revisiting his legendary Liquid Room set.

Festivalgoers at Carriageworks can expect an electrifying mix of music, performance and dining across three dynamic weekends. Electronic music steps into the spotlight as Skin on Skin presents his high‑voltage series, while Alison Wonderland revives her cult Wonderland Warehouse Project. Porter Robinson brings his acclaimed DJ show.

Blending light installations, music festivals, food experiences, and creative talks, Vivid Sydney 2026 transforms the city into a living, breathing canvas. With free experiences, global talent, and cutting-edge creativity, it remains one of the best festivals in the world—and the ultimate travel experience in Sydney.
